Image is EVERYTHING
On Tuesday night, the Calgary Flames looked very good in a game that although it is early in the season, they clearly needed to have a good game and were in as close to a must win situation as a team can get in the first month of the season. They did what they needed to do as an upper echelon team (although there is some dispute of that) and won convincingly against a struggling Coyotes team, but now they face a team that has given them fits in the past, and a team that is also considered a play-off contender at the very least. As much as last game was a way to set things moving in the right direction again, tonight's game could be a statement game; A game that shows the rest of the league that the Flames truly are back on track and ready to challenge for their division. The type of game that can get the team back to being known for relentless punishing hockey that it has been known for in recent seasons. If for no other reason that keeping that reputation, the Flames need to come out and punish the Preds tonight. Considering the history these teams have, they will both be up for the game, so this should be an inspired match to witness. If the Flames bring their A-game, they should regain some of the respect that has dwindled with their slow start. The Flames need teams to know that they're going to be punished when they play the sea of red. That's the image they need to project.
Sadly, the game isn't on National television or even PPV here in Calgary. The CBC is showing the Canucks and Caps for the late game so Calgary fans won't get to see their Flames in action without a ticket. That's sad, but makes an excellent segue into a point I make every year but feel doesn't get enough exposure:
WHY DON'T ALL TEAMS PLAY IN ALL ARENA'S EVERY YEAR?
Seriously? The reason's the NHL uses are lame. Rivalries/Cost/Insert Lame Excuse Here… Are telling me that The Minesota Wild and Calgary Flames is a bigger rivalry than the Flames and Habs? Cost? Please… travel costs are one thing the owners actually have a handle on expenditure-wise.. and if they were scheduled preoperly, the costs would only marginally increase over what they pay now… And look at the benefits! Oh no… we wouldn't want to have to expose our starts to our complete audience… That just doesn't make sense… Of course not… This from the same marketing department that tried to go all cerebral and Hollywood last year instead of just marketing the talent it already has! Every team should play in every building EVERY YEAR… How is that hard? I have an idea… I used a complex scheduling program called thinking for two minutes and came up with a simple solution… I've written it before so it may seem familiar:
8 games against own division = 32 games
2 games home/away against every other team 50 games
Total = 82
How can that be sooooo hard?
It's called marketing… Look into it.
/End rant
Have a great day
